CAS and C#
Richard Lowe is compiling a series of articles talking about Complex Adaptive Systems and how to implement them using C# and the .NET Framework. CAS are a fascinating subject and something I’ve been interested in every since I started working at the BiosGroup in Santa Fe.I thought, given the complexity of his subject matter (no pun intended) that a suggested reading list might be in order. Feel free to add more to it either here or in his comments section. Hidden Order and Adaptation in Natural and Artificial Systems: An Introductory Analysis with Applications to Biology, Control, and Artificial Intelligence – John Holland – John Holland is the father of the genetic algorithm, at least the computer based one, as well as many modern CAS ideas. How Nature Works: The Science of Self-Organized Criticality – Per Bak – More of a general introduction to self organization. The Quark and the Jaguar: Adventures in the Simple and the Complex – Murray Gell-Man – One of the fathers of complexity science. Another general introduction to CAS.Swarm Intelligence: From Natural to Artificial Systems (Santa Fe Institute Studies on the Sciences of Complexity) -Eric Bonabeau, Marco Dorigo, Guy Theraulaz. – A discussion of how the behaviors and interactions of insects and birds can be applied toward problem solving and AI by one of the experts in the field (Dr. Bonabeau). I believe Dr. Bonabeau is stil working at EuroBiosI’d be remiss if I didn’t include my old boss Dr. Stuart KauffmanInvestigations is his latest book. An excellent discussion about how order can arise from chaos by one of the founders of the Santa Fe Institute At Home in the Universe: The Search for Laws of Self-Organization and Complexity Here is a quote about this book from Steven Jay GouldSteven Jay Gould – Kauffman has done more than anyone else to supply the key missing piece of the propensity for self-organization that can join the random and the deterministic forces of evolution in a satisfactory theory of life’s order. Introduction to MultiAgent Systems -Michael Wooldridge – Describes the basis for the kinds of systems that can be built using Complex Adaptive Agents(CAA)There are many white papers and disertations available on the subject of CAS at the Santa Fe Institutes web site
