Wow, ouch for Microsoft
Silicon Valley – Dan Gillmor’s eJournal – Microsoft Change? Don’t Hold Your Breath
Sadly, I agree with this article. I think Microsoft needs a lot of changes at the top, I mean TOP, before they can heal their reputation and really start to change.
The Lindows suit really pisses me off. I understand protecting your trademark, but what they are doing is just trying to stifle the Lindows product. They failed in the US, so now they are using their bankroll to force a smaller company to defend themselves all over the world. It’s ludicrous.
It’s funny that Microsoft is spending all this time, money and effort on stifling Linux products when their real competition on the desktop is from Apple. Apple is going to kill them in the coming years, they really need to pull a rabbit out of their hat with Longhorn to remain relevant and dominant.
update: Robert Scoble posts his thoughts on the article – he points out that they are making some changes, including in how executives are compensated. He points out that the people he interviews are focused on making the customers experience better. I think that has always been the case. I’ve never met a softie or an ex-softie that was focused on making sure that they throw a “spanner in the works” for the competition. They have always been focused the end user, a lot of the things that make the Windows EU experience better, like having everything connected together and embedded in the system, make it harder for the competition. I’ve never thought that the problem with Microsoft lay in the thousand of worker bees, it’s the Queen and management that are the problem.
