DevDAys blogging contest

Julia Lerman Blog – Don’t Be Iffy… – Thanks to SAMS and Amy Sorokas for a DevDays Blogging prize of a discount coupon

That was a big steaming load of crap. The DevDays bloggers site is a big steaming load of crap. It’s all about being an MVP or being popular. The contest was crap. I specifically made two posts that dealt directly with the DevDays content, including one that was a review of the Seattle DevDays which had, I believe, the largest audience. They other dealt with storing hashed passswords in your database. Did they ever show up in the DevDays bloggers feed? Nope, if you go there and look under my name (Scott Koon) do you see any of the posts? Nope.

I’m showing a lot of search engine hits on to my site on the hashed password post so I know it hit the mark with the developers. It’s something they are searching for so they can implement it in their applications. But it never made it on the DevDays bloggers radar screen.

So that’s the last “Community event blog” I’m going to read or try to participate in. What a load of crap. They gave out a prize for being popular. Congratulations.

Edit to add: Not that I’m blaming the Boston bloggers for accepting their prize. It’s not their fault that DevDaysBloggers is a steaming pile of crap and they’d be stupid not to take something given to them for free.

Scott, I believe they were counting # of posts, not number of reads. They were trying to encourage people to blog about the event to get interest up. You are more than welcome to my discount coupon if you’d like. I was going to raffle it off (raffles involve no $) at my user group.

    Hi Julie,

My biggest complaint isn’t about who won the contest or even the fact that there was a contest and not everyone got to compete fairly in the contest (How do we know more people aren’t blogging about the Seattle DevDays when my posts about the Seattle DevDays weren’t ever included? Maybe they didn’t include other people Seattle related posts and Seattle was the most blogged about DevDays?), it’s that the site is supposed to be a blog aggregator site but it didn’t really aggregate the blogs. I made two posts where I specifically mentioned DevDays in the body and the subject of my post. They were both related to the content presented at DevDays, but neither of them were included in the main feed. Probably because my blog isn’t contained under the “weblogs.asp.net” umbrella. (that’s the cynic in my talking).

Joining DevDaysBlogs.net was an experiment for me. I wanted to see if I liked being a part of an aggregated site like that. Since I never GOT to be a part of it, I guess I didn’t like the experience. The experiment failed and I most likely won’t be doing that again unless someone starts up a ‘cynical, cranky bastards blogs’ site. hmmmmmmm.

Thanks for the offer of you coupon, but I’m looking over my bookshelf and I don’t see a single Sams Press book on it. I’ve never found their library to be useful to me. I’m more of an O’Reilly/A! Press man it seems.

Scott, thanks for the feedback. Although “a big steaming load of crap” hits hard, its my fault for your frustration, and I apologize. Right now, I’m still monitoring blogs in SharpReader. Its a manual process for me to copy the blog RSS URL from our system to SharpReader. In your case, I either (1) forgot to do this step, (2) the URL was not responding at that time, or (3) SharpReader crashed close to that time. Whatever the reason, I was missing your posts. You are right, they are both great posts and should have been included. I’m working daily to improve the system and including an internal aggregator. This would not have changed the outcome of the contest, but nonetheless, the whole point is to forward you more readers and that didn’t happen.

For future events, I’m going to make a link available to let me know that I might be missing someones posts. They should always appear in 24-48 hours depending on the number of posts arriving.

Drew, words are all we have on blogs so sometimes you have to use strong words to convey a strong point. Don’t take it personally, I don’t know you from nothing and I don’t have anything against you personally. Maybe setting up a trackback link for the *bloggers site would work out better. Let the poster decide if they want to include their post in the aggregate feed, it’s easier to delete posts that are offtopic I think than to try and monitor all of the feed for posts that are on topic. THe internal aggregator sounds like a good idea too.
