Xgrid and Cocoa Applications
Brian has a point. You can’t just let any schmuck use your processor. BUT what about an grid enabled application that works with a P2P or IM application and only allows people in your “buddy list” to use your processor?
I see the applications of grid computing not just in the big number crunching kind of applications (e.g. rendering farms and such). I see it being used in state machines, persistant worlds, and games. One of the tradional limitations to MMORPGS has been the number of people you can have in a given world. This is usually fixed by creating multiple independant worlds, shards is what I think Ultima Online calls them. A grid enabled MMORPG could take some of the burden off of the servers. The clients would not only handle rendering their view of the world, but also help out those less fortunate and help maintain and evolve the state of the world. Giving rise to an enviroment much like the one described in “Snow Crash” (I’m drawing a blank on the name right now). This could also lower the startup costs for new games. If can make your MMORPG grid enabled, you don’t have to invest as much in infrastructure.
