MSN Toolbar with tabbed browsing

Wow, this thing really sucks. Opening a new tab causes the entire screen to flash, swapping between tabs causes the entire browser window to flash, pages take longer to render than they used to. This thing is so far behind Firefox, hell it’s so far behind the 3rd party IE derivatives that add tabbed browsing, that the MSN team should be embarassed that this thing was ever released, let alone with an actual version number rather than as a “beta”.

Not to mention that installing the damn thing required a REBOOT, and it wasn’t a polite reboot. There was no progress dialog, no dialog box asking me if I wanted to restart my computer now or later. My system suddenly started asking me if I wanted to save open documents and the “end task” dialog boxes started popping up. That’s really unacceptable. First, it’s a friggin’ BROWSER TOOLBAR. Why is a full system restart needed? Yahoo and Google can figure out how to install their toolbars without restarting the entire system, why can’t MSN Search.

This thing is such a piece of crap, I’m actually going to uninstall it because I’m worried about the quality of the developers that wrote it and the code they put in it.

I’m writing this and tracking back to Dare and the MSN Search teams in the hope that they will learn something. If they don’t learn anything, they shouldn’t be surprised if in 5 years they are trying to get their toolbar to work under Safari.

update> Oh this just gets better and better. If I remove the MSN IE Search Toolbar, I also have to remove the Outlook Search bar and the MSN Deskbar. Both of which I actually like. I can’t just turn off the IE toolbar. Nice. Well, if it uninstalls the Desktop Search engine at the same time, it looks like I’m going back to Google desktop search or Copernic Desktop.

You can turn of the IE toolbar easily while keeping the rest. Right-click while the mouse is over the top of your browser and uncheck ‘MSN Search Toolbar’

Thanks for the reply Dare. Yeah, I knew I could do that. I actually wanted to revert back to the old version of my toolbar. This new toolbar with the tabs seems a bit too hacked up for my taste. I was amazed that the Deskbar and Outlook bar were tied to the toolbar.

So I had to uninstall the whole thing, now I’m re-installing the MSN Search toolbar. I obtained this version by going to “search.msn.com” and clicking on “Desktop”, then clicking on the … whoops, looks like this one is the same as the other. Crap. Oh well, I’ll try running this version with the IE toolbar hidden and see how stable it is. After all, it’s only time out of my life.

Why don’t you just use Firefox like the rest of us?

I am William, the problem is I like the MSN Desktop Search engine better than Googles or Copernic. But the MSN Desktop Search comes bundled with this crappy toolbar.

I’m amazed I’ve heard no mention of the ghost windows that open. On my machine if I open a tab it opens the same page both in a tab and in a floating window. The floating window “dings” if you click it and is impossible to close. If you close the tab containing the same content the window magically disappears too.

Microsoft seems to have tied way to many things to the Internet Explorer interface. We’ve known that all along but now it’s burning them. Did you know your quick launch shortcut bar is stored under Application Date\Microsoft\Internet Explorer? It’s a web browser, it shows web pages. Stop trying to turn it into an operating system!

I haven’t talked about it because I’ve uninstalled the toolbar and the desktop search. My task bar kept disappearing, requiring me to bring up the task manager and ‘run task’ explorer.exe to get it back. After I uninstalled the toolbar, I haven’t had any problems with my taskbar disappearing.

Granted I’ve gone 2 years without a re-install. I know I need to rebuild my machine, but I’ve got to get work done now. I can’t spend a lot of time massaging explorer and my taskbar.
