Senior Junior

Julie Lerman Blog – Vermont IT Jobs: Two Software Developer Positions at Vertek in Burlington, VT: “”

Jeez! What do they consider “senior”? Do I have to have worked on the Apollo lander or ENIAC or something?

I’m not sure I understand your distress here. My title is “Senior Applications Architect” in my current job. I have 30 years experience in programming. They are asking for 5. Should my title be “Ancient Applications Architect”?

Maybe “Elder”. That’s got the Gandalf-like connotations going for it.

Reading through the position requirements, I got the impression that any distress is related to breadth of knowledge expected, not necessarily years of experience.

I don’t know if someone who considers him/herself an expert in:

    § Oracle SOA Suite/Fusion Middleware
    § Oracle Application Server

would consider themselves a “Junior Software Developer”

FWIW – Jim – I think you should simply go w/ the title of “Gandalf” In 5 more years, you can bump it up to Sr. Gandalf.

Precisely Dave. That’s an awful lot for a junior dev to know. I think it was created by a clueless HR type doing buzzword screening. Either that or they don’t really know what the dev will be doing once they are hired. Either way, I don’t think I’d take junior dev pay if I really did know 3 things out of the optional list + required things.

I originally just copied & pasted from the email they sent with the request though I had the same reaction about the long list, especially the one for “junior”. I think of “junior” as someone coming out of college who is ready to learn learn learn. After some thought, I took the actual listings off my post and pointed to their career page.
