Mediabistro recommendations/comments?
My wife is trying to get into freelance writing and is looking for a little bit of advice. The site provides some information and contacts to paying members. Please leave a comment if you’ve used or looked at Mediabistro. If you are a a freelance writer, feel free to leave her any advice.
Hi,
I’m trying to become a writer and it is highly recommended to build your own website. Thinking about using mediabistro.com to host my personal home page (free w/ the $50 membership). http://www.mediabistro.com/homepages/start.asp?ref=/homepages/Default.asp Does anyone have experience Mediabistro or any recommendations? The site is designed for writers, otherwise I’d use something free.
The Polyglot programmer is already here.
Chris’s Weblog – Polyglot Programming
I made the point during the fishbowl that the polyglot programmer is already here. Web developers have always used HTML + JavaScript client-side, some kind of server language (PHP, VBScript + ASP, Java/JSP, etc … ), and they’ve usually had to write some kind of database access using SQL. I don’t see this changing in the near future. But it does appear to be entering the, normally, single-language arena of the business layer. People are starting to look at functional languages (e.g. F#, Erlang, Scala, Haskel) and finding them useful for writing unit tests, business rules, and algorithms. They want to be able to integrate them with their normal language of choice.
There is some pushback on this notion. But I disagree.
Education without jargon
I might be an elitist, but you’re a misanthrope – Jeremy D. Miller — The Shade Tree Developer
I hope I didn’t come across as misanthropic.Either in the 2 sessions I posted or during my participation. My main goal is to expand my understanding of certain technologies and practices so that I can explain it to other developers without resorting to jargon. IMO, that’s a sign of true understanding.
Sometimes, it feels like alt.net is talking about how to get more power out of the di-lithium crystals, while I’m trying to convince people that the wheel they are reinventing should be roughly round for the best performance. It was good to have that misconception dispelled by people like JP Boodhoo and others. Alt.Net is doing just as much educating as it is exploring.
That doesn’t mean that I’m NOT a cynical misanthrope, just that I was trying not to be in this case.
